Supernatural Academy (Supernatural Academy, #1) 2 2.5 Stars I think I m being generous with my rating because this book really got on my nerves However, I did manage to finish it in two days so the story interested me enough to give it a couple of stars It had so much potential to be a great book Atlantis storyline, academy setting, five hot supernatural guys even if it s not RH , mean girl subplot, and my favoritean all powerful, badass, special Mary Sue I know many readers hate these girls, but I read to escape and prefer fantasy over reality Unfortunately, it didn t deliver There just wasn t enough happening and it dragged A whole lot of talking, but not much action I would have lovedabout Maddison s academy training,of her mysterious connection with water, and definitelybattles Instead, I got way too much unnecessary filler that didn t advance the story dances, shopping trips, every meal described Even the conclusion, which had a little action, was rushed and underwhelming However, my biggest complaint about this book is how completely shallow it was Seriously, about half of it consisted of detailed descriptions of every single outfit, worn by every single character, every single day Over, and over, and over Hair, make up, shoes, and a whole lot of Girl, you look hot No girl, you look hot I have a headache from all my eye rolling Moving on. 3.5 Stars This book was hard for me because I loved the characters and I loved the plot and the storyline but I didn t love the execution The writing felt a tad choppy and disjointed at times and it didn t flow as organically as I would have liked There were a few parts that I skimmed just to get back to somethingengaging and captivating It just felt like something was slightly missing, like just barely out of reach Whatever that is would have catapulted this book to a greater level After reading the Supernatural Prison series book 1 Dragon Marked and the Curse of the Gods series book 1 Trickery and loving both, I was super excited to see this book come out I dropped everything and bought it when it released Maybe my expectations were too high I don t know It just wasn t everything that I hoped for That being said, this is a very promising lead in to the new series I thought the book was interesting and creative and as I mentioned before, I really, really love the characters main and secondary I will still recommend Supernatural Academy Year One to my urban fantasy loving friends and I look forward to book two andyear of the purpleAlso, for those who hate cliffhangers, this bookdoesresolve the major conflict from the story so it reads as complete, though there will clearly be a continuation of the story as there isyet to come with everything that has been happening You don t need to wait for the next book to come out before starting this one I would suggest grabbing it up now and meeting these awesome characters and exploring their world at the academy.Oh and final thought Shout out to whoever designed this cover It s gorgeous and totally fits the book. Originally posted at My Rating 3 and a half starsAs always, with this author, I adore the world building She does a fantastic job at making this magical universe a realistic and believable one My one problem with everything is the overall pacing, which I ll elaborate on later in this review.Maggi has had a crappy life so far at 22 years old and it just got so much weirder I like how sassy and stubborn she is She doesn t accept everything right away but she doesn t turn into a hysterical mess either Given time she adapts quite well to her new life Her relationship with Asher takes a long while to start but after that things take a turn with lots of impossible problems with no solutions.Asher and all his friends seemed like awesome guys I don t understand why they re so standoffish to most everyone in the school except the new girl and her friends, but I can let that slide He seems to like and be intrigued by Maggi just as much as she is by him They seem like a great couple.I ve been unofficially taking a break from YA for a few months I ve been having the worst luck when it comes to picking out books in the YA section So I liked how this book took something that would usually be in the 15 17 age bracket and put it into a new adult adult form I can t say this enough, the world building is amazing The map at the beginning of the book was awesome. The only problem I had with this book was the pacing of the story The first half was way too slow It took over 18 chapters for Maggi and Asher to have a full conversation The second half felt rushed for no apparent reason because some obscure things started connecting the dots out of thin air and then it ended If there was one thing this author would benefit in improving in future books it would be developing streamlined pacing for a book series. The end wasn t what I was expecting it to be I was on the edge of my seat waiting for a lot of things to possibly happen but what actually happened wasn t it I m interested in what happens next and maybe even getting a series of spin off books for Asher s group of supernaturals. My Favorite QuotesThis year there would be light, because I d had my damned share of darkness, Music moves everyone in different ways and it s magic even humans can access Sorry, I sometimes talk without thinking It s a problem I m not working on DNF at 81%I just can t take the annoying cliche shit any It s really boring and stupid And why is there such a huge reverse harem vibe when this is clearly not a reverse harem It s fucking annoying I was gonna try to finish this because I m so close but I m too irritated Disclaimer All my DNFs get 1 star I know it s a major point of contention and is seen as a reviewer faux pas for a lot of people, but I don t care My review, my rules Peer pressure can suck itself. I really enjoyed reading this book, i didn t want it it end tho I liked the mc personality, she was fun, says what she s thinking at the moment, blunt and kind I liked the atlantea guys, especially Asher ofc i know it s not a RH but i wanted it to be I thought Kate would befeisty, bitchy and nasty, she didn t show up and cause so much chaos as i thought she would I asume she will appear in the next book I love that this in in the same world as the Supernatural Prison series I was unsure at first, but it is, which is really fun, because we saw Louis I liked the academy a lot, and that Maddi, the MC, had friends that were female, aside from the guys I do feel like I have less of a sense of each of them though, in part due to the time skips present I liked Maddi, and loved her hair pink is my favorite color so having her as the MC worked well for me It was cool to have a magic user MC as opposed to a shifter like Jessa, the MC of the Supernatural Prison series The plot being based around Atlantis is very interesting, and I m excited to learnI wish there wasdetail about her classes and learning to use her powers later on Good first book of a new series 4 stars. Maddison is plucked off the streets and carted off to Europe to the Supernatural Academy Evidently, she s been putting off bursts of power of an unknown kind and they finally caught up to her Luckily, the school is pretty cool and beats living on the streets Maddison learns all about the supernatural races, including Atlanteans, represented by 5 hunky popular guys, but she is still unsure what type of supernatural she is Asher is the leader of the Atlanteans and Maddison feels an instant connection to him Could she be an Atlantean As she tries to unlock her power, she attracts the attention of an outside group and must rely on Asher and his friends to keep her safe All in all, I liked it I thought including Atlanteans in the supernatural races was a fun twist on the usual suspects witches, shapeshifters, and vampires Maddison is in line with other FMCs that Jaymin Eve has written she s likable and quirky, she doesn t take crap from anyone which often gets her in trouble, and she is extremely loyal once she makes a friend I ll be looking for the next installment in the series, I think it will be fun. 3,5 starsLike The character are not teens All of them are 21 The world is well built. It s not a RH and i liked the connection with the other guys non sexual Not so much The story is predictable. The h is the usual clueless girl, with terrible childhood and mommy and daddy issues sometimes she comes out a little to bitchy has a defense mechanism Their relation is a bit forced Maddison James Is About To Discover Some Truths About The WorldFirstly Supernaturals Exist WTF Secondly She Is One, Even Though No One Seems To Know Exactly What Kind Double WTFThirdly She S About To Go Back To School Well, Things Just Got A Little InterestingThe Supernatural Academy Is Where Shifters, Vampires, Magic Users, And Fey Are Educated Where They Are Taught About Their Abilities, And How To Function In The Human World Maddison Already Has The Human Part Down, But This Supernatural Thing Is An Entirely New Dangerous GameExample One Mean Girls Who Can Actually Turn You Into A FrogExample Two Asher Lock, A God At The Academy Not Literally Well, Who Knows For Sure He Certainly Acts The Part, As Do All Of His Minions Who Worship HimAsher Drives Her Crazy, Because Apparently Snarly, Gorgeous, And Arrogant Is Her Thing, And Despite Their Mutual Dislike, Sparks Fly Between Them The They Re Thrown Together, The Asher Is Determined To Figure Out What S Been Blocking Her AbilitiesUntil The Moment The Truth Is Revealed, And They Find Out Nothing In This Supernatural World Is What They Thought DNF, this starts with a cliche kid knapping as a plot device to get the heroine where she s supposed to go Then it gets evencliche with the heroine just getting over being kid knapped and accepting it all in under an hour. This is set in the Supernatural Prison world and but it is not at all up to par with that series There is a lack of character building and worldbuilding throughout This is a sad disappointment.
