Open Your Eyes 3.75 starsLiterary wars A violent act And of course, CRAZINESSOpen Your Eyes is a riveting, entertaining psychological thriller about a semi famous author who is violently attacked with a nail gun, suffers a brain injury and loses his memory His wife, a wannabe writer, is left picking up the pieces, while at the same time trying to figure out who would try to hurt her husband in such a horrific manner She digs where she s not supposed to, finds some incriminating evidence, and puts herself in a danger While it might sound rather formulaic, this is not the case as there is a WHOLE lotgoing on than it first seems Jane s voice draws the reader in Told completely from her perspective, it was refreshing to have one narrator and one main storyline vs multiple storylines, narrators, etc The storyline isn t fully believable, but it didn t bother me too much as it wasn t so extreme or over the top that it got in the way of my enjoyment Overall, I found this to be a fun, but sometimes slow, read I could have done without the final chapter it left me rolling my eyes a bit I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Grove Atlantic in exchange for an honest review. Jane s husband Leon, is attacked in their car with the couple s two young children in the backseat Jane finds Leon unconscious and unresponsive in the driver s seat While Leon is in a coma, Jane learns that her husband had secrets and kept many things from her This book is a psychological thriller which asks the question how well do we know those in our lives How well do we know our spouses Our friends Our neighbors Jane becomes determined to learn why someone would want to harm her husband Her husband is a best selling Author and she can t think of anyone who would want to harm him He writes books, for crying out loud There are a few little twists, turns and revelations in this book I enjoyed the story and found it to be an enjoyable read I particularly liked that I didn t quite know where this book was going at times and found I enjoyed being along for the ride Even though there is an attack in this book, the reader is told about it, we do not read about the actual attack in detail There is no graphic violence in the book, so most readers will be able to enjoy this book without having to worry about reading any graphic or disturbing scenes I enjoyed that most of the interactions were character driven and especially loved when Jane got feisty She is not someone who enjoys confrontation but grows in confidence as the book progresses.Thank you to the publishers and Edelweiss who provided me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review The thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.Readof my reviews at www.openbookpost.com My reviews can also be seen at StarsJane is frustrated It feels like her writing career is going nowhere She has six unpublished novels and the rejection is starting to get to her Her husband, Leon, on the other hand, is a well published author He tries to reassure her, It s not your fault they don t want your work but I don t get why it has to hit you so hard every time But he doesn t get it He s a successful PUBLISHED author His work pays the bills Of course, Jane is happy for him but it doesn t make the constant rejection any easier to take. But on Leon s 46th birthday as they are heading to his mother s house for dinner, Leon is attacked by an unknown assailant The attack leaves him in a coma.Jane doesn t understand Who would do this And why As Jane tries to deal with the fallout of everything that has happened she wants answers But what she ends up with isquestions One thing that does become clear is that her husband has been keeping secrets She can t pretend everything is fine any Everything is FAR from fine. What else has Leon been keeping from her What will happen if when Leon wakes up from his coma Will Jane finally get the answers she deserves And if so, will she be able to handle what she hears So many secrets So many lies.Jane starts to wonder if she knew her husband at all.I ve enjoyed quite a few of Paula Daly s previous novels so I was really looking forward to reading this novel After a really intriguing beginning, I did find it a bit difficult to get into the story However, I m really glad I stuck with it as it definitely picked up again Even though I needed to suspend my disbelief at times, I still enjoyed the story. With an engaging plot and some intriguing characters, Open Your Eyes was a quick and interesting read I am looking forward to readingfrom this author.I d like to thank Bantam Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review. A compulsively good, twisty thriller that will make you consider the nightmare a life can become following a single moment This is my first Paula Daly and I had a blast reading Open Your Eyes I actually wish I could start this review with the last line of the book, because it was THAT GOOD But of course, the last line would spoil some things about the story so I won t post it here But if you ve read Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly or when you do, savor that last line I m still thinking about it days later About the BookJane Campbell avoids confrontation at any costs Given the choice, she ll always let her husband, Leon a bestselling crime writer take the lead, while she focuses on her two precious young children and her job as a creative writing teacher After she receives another rejection for her novel, Leon urges Jane to put her hobby to rest And why shouldn t she, when through Jane s rose tinted glasses, they appear to have the perfect house and the perfect life But then Leon is brutally attacked in their driveway while their children wait quietly in the car, and suddenly, their perfect life becomes the stuff of nightmares Who would commit such a hateful offense in broad daylight With her husband in a coma, Jane must open her eyes to the problems in her life, as well as the secrets that have been kept from her Although she might not like what she sees, if she s committed to discovering who hurt her husband and why Jane must take matters into her own hands.ReflectionWell, I completely loved this book Let s start with the main drama of the book Leon s injury In the few minutes that Jane went inside to grab things for their trip, Leon is attacked in a horrifying way and it leaves permanent damage Even beyond the coma, Jane has to go through the experience of living with someone who had a traumatic brain injury And this injury has completely changed Leon He has memory issues and personality changes that would be so difficult to live with I have a colleague who was married to someone who suffered a traumatic brain injury and it was so awful His personality completely changed, and eventually it was no longer safe for her or her children to be around him And the saddest part is, it is not his fault So you want to stay and do the right thing Brain injuries can truly change a person s personality They may be angrier, suffer from poor decision making Of course, I won t say how it plays out in this book You ll have to read and see Often as the swelling reduces, many of their new issues will lessen Will Leon be so lucky And then we have the mystery itself Aside from the changes to Leon, what was he not telling Jane before the accident She s stuck with questions and no answers As Jane investigates, troubling information will come to light, and she s left alone unable to talk to Leon about it I loved Jane and her storyline I though Paula Daly handled the realities of this change to Jane s life in such an authentic way.And then we have a delightful storyline about writers Not only are Jane and Leon writers, but they have friends and other colleagues who enter the plot I was fascinated by the dynamics between Leon a successful writer and Jane a still unpublished writer Each has their own hang ups For Leon, how will he know he can deliver book after book And for Jane, how will she know when to keep trying to catch her break And then we have the whole cast of writers in between This storyline sang to my writer s soul It is a real treat, and I think many readers and writers will relate to the issues presented in the book. And then we are back to that ending Loved it It was so perfect I can t wait for readers to get to the closing line, and reflect back on the book I m still processing it days later Many thanks to the team at Grove Press for my copy of this book to review. 3.5 Leon is a successful crime author with a devoted following He lives a quiet, unassuming life with his wife Jane and their 2 young children When an attempt is made on Leon s life, Jane scrambles to hold her family together while searching for answers why anyone would want to intentionally hurt Leon.It doesn t take much digging to discover there s a great dealabout her husband than she could have ever imagined Has she been married to a complete stranger How is she supposed to live with a man who had all these secrets There were sections of this book that were a bit scattered, but overall the story line was entertaining and it flowed easily and quickly While some plot lines were easily deduced, there was still enough surprises along the way to keep me guessing And the ending Welllet s just say This was my first book I ve read by Paula Daly but will definitely be looking forof her works in the future.A buddy read with Susanne Thank you to NetGalley, Grove Press and Paula Daly for an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review. OPEN YOUR EYES rocked my boat Did you know that some people who suffer from Traumatic Brain injuries will have increased sexual compulsive desires Did you also know that brain injuries arecommon in the UK than breast cancer Both of these things are true And both are true for Leon Campbell Jane and Leon Campbell live in Liverpool with their two young children Since coming out of an induced coma, from his traumatic brain injury, Leon began acting out his increased sexual compulsive inappropriate behavior Leon s public hobby of masturbation at the hospital was bad enough but it certainly wasn t going to fly at home around the kids Jane was seriously worried to have Leon return home justified concerns When Jane asked Dr Letts how do families cope with a brain injured spouse parent The doctor replied, I m not sure everyone does cope YIKES Nothing about Leon was the same as before he was attacked TWO NAILS TO HIS HEAD WITHIN MINUTES by who knows who THAT S WHAT READERS ARE GOING TO FIND OUT AND MORE SOME.but it s not only WHO DID THIS TO HIM police were doing their investigation , but how to survive and manage daily life.Jane was petrified Leon had no memory of the weeks preceding his attack other than he felt certain it wasn t Jane but Inspector Ledecky hadn t ruled her out.Leon had no job they were in debt Leon showed signs of erratic violence without warning by screaming and yelling profanity and Jane has discovered lies and secrets Leon was keeping Jane had just taken a teaching job needed the money and couldn t possibly leave Leon alone to watch the children HE NEEDED WATCHING Leon was a published author Jane wrote too Their close friends were writers.ButTheir neighbors were not their friends nor writers And Jane felt certain her neighbors or their odd son who visited often was watching their house..With all the worry stress going on inside the Campbell household neighborhood issues for Jane.as caretaker mother Financial provider she was threatened physically and verbally by a prison inmate where she was assigned to teach and guide with creative writing We begin to see that the size of this puzzle book is bigger andcomplicated than our eyes first saw at the beginning of this novel As readers our eyes open wider the closer we get to the end of the book The ferocious suspense in the dog eat dog world of writers hungry to be published is as hard as nails literally and figuratively Awesome great book When s Paula s next book This is fiction thriller suspense..smart normal ish classy suspense psychological thriller without being bloody trashy nonsense Many thanks to PAULA DALY I m SUCH A FAN Thank you GROVE ATLANTA I m a fan of you guys too Thank You Netgalley. it s been awhile Taking a mostly sabbatical this year has been good for me But I always appreciate having the door open for return visits. Open Your Eyes was a different ditty in a good way The main character, Jane Campbell, a creative writing teacher, does not like confrontation I can relate to that She is married to a top crime writer, Leon, and she takes the backseat to him Jane s focus is on the family, including her two young children however, she finally submits a manuscript to a publisher only to be rejected Rather than push her to try again, Leon asks her to let her hobby of writing go Jane s idyllic, quiet life comes to an abrupt end when Leon is attacked in the driveway of their home during the day with her children watching Leon is now in a coma, and Jane s eyes are opened to the truth about her life, including some hidden secrets She is convicted to find the truth, including who attacked Leon Leon is living with a traumatic brain injury, and Daly handles his recovery with care and empathy I enjoyed the presentation of the story as if it were an autobiography written by Jane, since she is a talented writer in her own right I was on the edge of my seat with the suspense in this one, lots of guessing, and the ending was ultimately satisfying In Open Your Eyes, Paula Daly shatters the facade of what, for all appearances, is the perfect marriage She examines the vices of pride and envy and arranges a masterful whodunit Open Your Eyes answers that question we ask ourselves all too often do we ever really know those closest to us Thank you to the generous Grove Press for the ARC All opinions are my own My reviews can also be found on my blog www.jennifertarheelreader.com From Acclaimed Novelist And Master Of Psychological Thrillers Library Journal Paula Daly, Open Your Eyes Follows A Bestselling Crime Novelist S Tragic Turn From Fictional Perpetrator Into Real Life VictimJane Campbell Avoids Confrontation At Any Costs Given The Choice, She Ll Always Let Her Husband, Leon A Bestselling Crime Writer Take The Lead, While She Focuses On Her Two Precious Young Children And Her Job As A Creative Writing Teacher After She Receives Another Rejection For Her Novel, Leon Urges Jane To Put Her Hobby To Rest And Why Shouldn T She, When Through Jane S Rose Tinted Glasses, They Appear To Have The Perfect House And The Perfect Life But Then Leon Is Brutally Attacked In Their Driveway While Their Children Wait Quietly In The Car, And Suddenly, Their Perfect Life Becomes The Stuff Of Nightmares Who Would Commit Such A Hateful Offense In Broad Daylight With Her Husband In A Coma, Jane Must Open Her Eyes To The Problems In Her Life, As Well As The Secrets That Have Been Kept From Her Although She Might Not Like What She Sees, If She S Committed To Discovering Who Hurt Her Husband And Why Jane Must Take Matters Into Her Own HandsA Surprising And Gripping Thriller Of Pride, Ambition, And Envy, Open Your Eyes Is An Unsettling Whodunit About The Illusions Of A Perfect Marriage That Confirms Paula Daly As A Writer At The Forefront Of Domestic Suspense 3.5 Stars rounded up Jane and Leon are married with two children Happy, of course, or at least Jane thinks so, though they fight like all couples do Leon is an uber successful crime writer while Jane is just a wannabe She tries not to be jealous of her husband s success but it s a difficult task One afternoon while getting ready to leave for his mother s house Leon gets into an argument with their neighbor over their outside cat, Bonita, of all things To think someone doesn t like cats Jane steps away, not wanting to get involved Next thing she knows, Leon is in the hospital having surgery and is put into a medically induced coma When he awakens he doesn t recognize Jane and is convinced he s married to his first wife Gina He even accuses Jane of causing his injury While waiting for her husband to recover, Jane starts investigating on her own, fearful that any day she ll get arrested Her investigation leads to secrets lots and lots of them and theshe uncovers, thedanger she s in Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly is a fun and intriguing domestic thriller I found it to be somewhat campy, yet wholly entertaining While there were a few parts of the story that I felt were a bit superfluous, all in all, it was an easy, enjoyable read This was a buddy read with Kaceey Thank you to NetGalley, Grove Atlantic and Paula Daly for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.Published on NetGalley and Goodreads on 9.7.18.
