Idol So I needed a new book to purchase and what can I say I am honestly impressed It is quite raunchy and I believe if you are a fan of x factor or sex and the city you will enjoy this book I m not going to give much away about the plot but it is a really enjoyable and fun read Also if you are jetting off on holiday it will be an amazing poolside read. Really enjoyable readThis is the first book by Duffy that I have read and thoroughly every page Based on a celebrity pop star and a struggling professional dancer, who have history from their childhood that they must put aside and work together to achieve a joint revenge goal. This is my first chick lit book and i got this book for RM8 on a sale for some light reading and I d say after reading it I would ve totally gotten the book for its original price Pretty well written for a first time author Love the characters and even though the story line was pretty predictable I think it s a job well done Carrie It was a page turner and i would definitely reread Loved it. This was a good, fun, chick lit read Perfect for when you just want to curl up, relax and unwind, allowing your mind to wander of into the fantasy land of Fiction At first I didn t think this book seemed very promising, but the I read the I found myself getting into it Still it s not really my kind of book I like novels about fame, so that s why I picked this up I found the book really gripping towards the end The novel is about the perspective of two young women Jenna Jonsson, a famous pop singer who is living the dream and Sadie Laine, a struggling dancer who should be where Jenna is A few years back they were rivals at a dance competition Jenna won when it should have been Sadie However on a holiday to Vegas, Sadie is discovered and offered the opportunity to be in an all girl dance group Meanwhile Jenna is doing a collaboration with famous rock band, Phoenix, though her reason for joining is partly because she fancies the gorgeous Nick Taylor.I found the characters a bit bland and a bit distant, they were not really characters I could relate to they were both a bit naive and irritating Their personalities seemed a little bland and I didn t find them that interesting The novel offers a realistic perspective of fame and what a corrupt and sexualised industry it has become There was a few good twists and it wasn t entirely predictable I wasn t expecting all the sex scenes there were in the book it was like 50 Shades of Grey P Sometimes less is I just felt that although it was an fair read with some good twists, I just didn t really connect with or like the characters and it was all a bit too 50 Shades of Grey It felt a bit too trashy sometimes I still think it s an OK book and I would recommend it, but it s not really my sort of thing I was a bit unsure of whether to give it 2 or 3 stars, but in the end I thought 2 was fair because this wasn t a really amazing book and not something that inspires you much.Grade C I came across Carrie Duffy when I was putting together content for International Chick Lit Month and the synopsis of her new book, Diva immediately spoke to me Three ladies living in Paris who are trying to make something of themselves in the fashion world The release date for Diva was not until a few months down the line so I contained myself by reading her previous title, Idol The outline of this book is very similar to Diva but set in the entertainment industry Jenna is a global pop sensation with millions of fans and hit albums Her light hearted teeny ballads are lapped up by her tween audiences but she wants something harder material that will let people take her seriously The chance arrives in the form of rock band, Phoenix who Jenna begins working with on a collaborative album and with it comes Nick Taylor, the talented and gorgeous drummer The two fall for each other and quickly become the new IT couple Now Jenna has it all a huge career and a guy who adores her, it all seems so perfect Or is it On the hand there is Sadie Laine, a session dancer who is trying to hit the big time She and Jenna have history they were both in a dance competition years back where Sadie gave the performance of her life She should have won but she didn t because Jenna s mum was having relations with one of the judges Jenna won and went off to the US and onto fame and fortune while Jenna lives in a cold and drafty room in a shared house in a dodgy part of London Is she bitter Yes just a bit Then something amazing happens, while on holiday in Vegas Sade is offered a role in a female dance group called who are basically a cool version of The Pussycat Dolls She is ecstatic and takes it Her dreams are finally coming true Then one day she gets a call from her agent asking her to stand in as a back up dancer for Jenna The ladies finally meet and realise that they have a common enemy who threatens to ruin them Can they put together their problems from the pass and unit in order to bring the guy to justice Carrie has a great writing style that really draws you into the lives of the characters The book alternates between the lives of Jenna and Sadie which shows you the deep contrast between their two lives but also allows you to capture the essence of their personalities it is no surprise that Carrie has been hailed as the new face of modern Chick Lit She reminds me very much of Louise Bagshawe in her early days when she was pumping out delights such as The Movie and Career Girls Some readers complained that Idol was very anti climatic because there was no stand off between Jenna and Sadie but that is not what the book is about it is the tale of two independent ladies who are turning their dreams into reality The book really captures the glamour of the music industry but also conveys how demanding it is and what sacrifices singers have to make in order to stand a chance of success I covered a book called Pop Tart a few years back which was about a teen singing sensation and how fame and fortune took its toll on her, well Idol is pretty much in the same vein but with much likeable and dynamic characters In this celebrity obsessed era, Idol is very time appropriate. As far as chick lit books go, this wasn t anything to rave about It was okay The men were relatively hot, if not a bit bland, and the women were the type that you were supposed to be insanely jealous of Which I wasn t This was mostly because the two protagonists weren t likeable, particularly Jenna, who often came across as childish and spoiled Supposedly she grew as a character as someone points out at the end, but I did not see this at all She was just as annoying and as much of a brat as she was at the end than at the beginning. Both Sadie and Jenna were described as undeniably stunning with perfect figures and perfect faces and effortless beauty Men fell at their feet They turned heads in the street They got everything they wanted.Which makes me and a lot of other readers out there, I d imagine hate them A good character is someone you can root for, someone who you can identify with I m sorry to say that most readers will not identify with these women And it s a real shame, because I think with a little relatability, they could have been really great heroines I hope that Duffy s future books have better protagonists.Of course, it wasn t all bad I finished it because I wanted to know what happened to the characters, namely Angela although it turns out that this wasn t fully resolved in the end disappointing It was a pretty good trashy book, one to read before bed every now and then but it won t change your life and you won t learn any life lessons from it I wouldn t recommend to a friend. Great chick lit book, a good storyline, you could read about the characters ups and downs, get frustrated when they make an obviously bad decision and laugh at the whole thing I think this would make a great movie Overall I thought this was a good book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes these sort or girly books I love this author and would read every one of her books This was a great poolside read This book was definitely worth reading After a lucky break winning a talent contest, Jenna Jonsson was now an international pop superstar She was living the dream When Jenna after taking a short break in her career, gets the chance to record with a world famous American band called Phoenix, with a dishy drummer called Nick Taylor who for a long time Jenna has had a crush on Jenna takes the opportunity to work with the band Jenna can not wait to begin work on the collaboration with the band But will Nick live up to the dream Sadie Lane always dreamed of being a successful dancer, but since she lost out on her big break, when it had been Jenna that had won the talent contest, that they both had entered Sadie was still working and dreaming of getting her big break So when Sadie has the chance to join a new stage show in Las Vegas that could make her dreams come true she decides to go for it.Jenna and Sadie are two girls with completely opposite lifestyles Childhood rivals, but when the time comes can Jenna and Sadie put their differences aside and work together Or will old rivalries get in the way Idol is a sizzling, sexy and sensational novel With two strong women as the leading characters that both have ambition and are determined to get what they want out of life Making this book a great read with a really good storyline, lots of drama and some steamy scenes that are raunchy and racy So be warned if you are planning to read this book on the train I really enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end and can not wait for the next book from Carrie Duffy.
